Story of Stuff is Worth Seeing

Why would a retailer even have a video like “Story of Stuff” on their website, much less on valuable home page “real estate”? That’s a good question and we have a good answer.

From workingwonders’ perspective as a “green from the ground up” home retailer, we know it’s high time for a revolution in the home/lifestyle products marketplace.

As human beings, we spend a lot of our days interacting with “tools for living,” or simply put, products. The things we purchase and how we interact with them make up our homes, workplaces and, altogether, our lifestyles – even when we are sleeping. In fact, we interact with a lot of “tools for living” when we sleep, including pillows, linens, mattresses, to name a few. It wasn’t until learning about how our indoor air quality is often negatively impacted by many of the seemingly innocent products I was bringing into my home, that I began making the connections between these products and my families' health.

Our health can be impacted from the stuff we purchase for our homes as by the food we eat. It was time to start looking at and assessing products I was considering purchasing, like furniture or window blinds, in the way I thought about making food choices. The corollaries are there. Chairs, cabinets, rugs, etc., like most of the food we eat, have gone through multiple processes and transformations (many times involving the unnecessary addition of known "toxic to human" substances), as well as journeys, before they become what we know them to be.

If you aren’t one of the millions people who’ve had the opportunity to watch Story of Stuff, Annie Leonard’s brilliant video that shows how our materials economy presently works, or better put “doesn’t work,” please accept my invitation to see it for yourself, now.

Transitioning to more sustainable homes and lifestyles takes looking at products with new eyes. Many people are already looking for the features and benefits that greener products offer.  Now it's time to be able to quickly evaluate whether or not products support sustainable homes and lifestyles. Like Whole Foods has endeavored to offer healthier food, workingwonders is committed to being a “green from the ground up” brand offering information and access to better “tools for living” products and services for healthier homes and lifestyles.

workingwonders also wants to recognize and give a lot of credit to those product suppliers who are “green from the ground up.” Many of those suppliers are just emerging, and working extraordinarily hard to get onto the radar screens of people who are also trying to find them. They need more visibility so we can support them with product sales. We also want to recognize suppliers that make quality products with some features and/or benefits of being sustainable and encourage them to implement “deeper shades” of green. Then, we want to make all the information available to you so you can decide what is most important to you. (See the workingwonders Green Guide)

As a retailer, workingwonders is committed to providing people with better products, services and information. Together, we will create a sustainable commerce revolution to help usher in the new green economy. (originally published 02.24.12)
